Since our last blog update things have started getting back to normal here in UV. The coffee harvest is about over and our neighbors are weighing and selling their beans. Although there will be much less this year. School has started up again and many of the high school students have left the community to study. The dry season is in full force. It hasn’t rained in a few months. So it’s very dry and dusty.
We have started moving forward on the nursery project in collaboration with the school. The 6th grade students built a fence to keep the chickens out. The 4th and 5th graders started preparing the seedbeds and the walkways. This week we have been working at a nursery in San Lucas and learning a little more about the process. We have also been gathering seeds from a few seed banks in the area. The plan is to start with just a few species including palo colorado, cedar, and pine. At the same time we will be collecting seeds in the community including orange, macadamia and papaya. This week we hope to get some tefrocia saplings planted to provide some shade. We will also be taking three rabbits back to start using their waste for some of our compost. The kids will love them. And its great to see some of them get excited about using the “Level A” a homemade level used to find the grade of a plot. It is exciting to finally start planting seeds. Members of the community have started taking interest in the project, which mean answering lots of questions. Our hope is that as the project takes shape more and more people will become interested. ¡Vamos a ver!
We have also been pretty busy working on repairing stoves. After building 10 new stoves with some of the men from the community we have started repairing the original 70 stoves. We have been averaging about 3 stoves a day. It’s been a great way to got to know the families a little better and we have been fed really well as repayment for our work. (The men from the community are also receiving payment from the project)
Well today we head back up after a few days of relaxation in San Lucas. Hope all is well and we would love to hear from you.
